After watching the movie Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol at Katong Mall, we headed to the opposite side of Katong Mall for French meal.
We were greedy yesterday. We had two servings of duck salad, one main course of confit duck, two main course of angel hair pasta with tiger prawns and Lumpfish caviar, one main course of angel hair pasta with kombu, a serving of foie gras (duck liver). Well, you need not be a food connoisseur to enjoy French food. Just watch how my two boys, both 9 and 12 this year, devoured their food and asking for more. It means the food is so fantastic that I need not coax them to eat or maybe try to feed them as well. Nothing is wasted.
Saveur’s angel hair pasta course is a dish with distinctive taste of ingredients rather than just a standard uniform taste, and the pudding-like texture inside the foie gras complements the greens and the olive oil. Check out the tender Confit Duck lying in comfort on top of the mash potato; it will let out steam from below. Barramudi was fresh and the mix salad of cube potato with crab meat was rather appetizing. A bottle of wine will make the meal perfect but you will not be able to get one in this coffee shop. Saveur offers takeaway and maybe you will enjoy a nice bottle of wine in the comfort of your home with the French cuisine. I will probably try that the next weekend.
And if you think that I spent a bomb on caviar and foie gras, you need not fret upon it as I did not need to go deep into my pockets for this meal (anyway my pockets are never deep). Saveur is located Ali Baba Eating House just at the junction of East Coast Road and Joo Chiat Road, or opposite Katong Mall. Saveur’s aim is to bring the best of French Fine Cuisine to the masses at slightly above the coffee shop standard. And I think they have probably achieved that.
They have finally moved to their new joint in Purvis Street many moons ago, and they have tried their very best to keep the prices at coffeeshop standard. With the ardent support from their die-hard fans, they even extended the Purvis Street outlet. How not to support Saveur when they still continue to serve their best at rock bottom prices?
